KWL (Levels 1 and 3)

Add your thoughts using the KWL approach. Thinking about Game Mechanics, Games-Based Learning or gamification.....

K = What do you know?
  • I know that it can be used to increase engagement from learners
  • I know that I enjoy creating games to allow for learning
  • I know that there are already some games out there

W = What do you want to learn?
  • I want to learn how to do it best
  • I want to learn what I can do to improve
  • I want to learn how other people do it

L = What have you learned? (we'll do this last one later)
  • elements that make up gamification
  • GBL is different to Gamification
  • I am still a bit confused about each of the terms components mechanisms etc but the rubric was quite helpful
  • there's a lot out there
  • gamification is quite an extensive area

Reflection

  • When I was engaged:
    • Something I was fully engaged in was writing a creative stimulus for a Business Studies Assignment
    • I felt excited and was enjoying the experience. I also felt mirth as we were having a good laugh as we went .
  • During the video
    • It tried to engage the viewer by using reference to LOTR and juxtaposition (of middle earth people on a plane) to engage
    • I think the way that it fostered engagement is good objectively but personally I think it was a bit too daggy and dated.
  • Marc Prensky
    • 12 elements. Games are/have:
    1. Fun. Gives us enjoyment and pleasure
    2. Play. Gives us intense and passionate involvement
    3. Rules. Gives us structure.
    4. Goals. Gives us motivation.
    5. Interactive. Gives us doing
    6. Adaptive. Gives us flow.
    7. Outcomes and feedback. Gives us learning.
    8. Win states. Gives us ego gratification.
    9. Conflict/competition/challenge/opposition. Gives us adrenaline.
    10. Problem solving. Sparks our creativity.
    11. Interaction. Gives us social groups.
    12. Representation and story. Gives us emotion.
    • I agree with these ideas
    • I particularly like the idea that outcomes and feedback come from games.
  • Love the 4 keys to fun:
    • Hard Fun - achieving a challenge
    • Easy Fun - exploration and role play
    • Serious Fun - fun to achieve something serious
    • People Fun - fun that relates to social connections
  • GBL - using games in the classroom
  • Gamification - putting game elements into something

Level 2

Where do I start?

Identify some learning outcomes that you will be visiting with your students in upcoming lessons. Note down here some ways they might benefit from gamification.

  • Business operations processes - transformation - the how of doing operations (at the production stage)
    • this is pretty dry so gamifying it could help with engagement
    • some aspects need practice so creating engagement may help to increase the want to practise it
  • Use of evidence and defences in criminal trial
    • problem solving/simulation activity to have them use their knowledge not just learn about it

Observe and reflect
After playing a game what are your personal thoughts about the design and elements involved and how any of these could help you in thinking about doing the same in a learning activity?

  • Simon Says: good as it was a well known game - maybe more GBL than gamification.
  • Stand up - Sit down brainstorms - Students all stand up and need to give an idea for the brainstorm, if they are incorrect of copy another idea then they sit down.
  • true false games - true hands on heads false hands at sides - forces participation as students not engaging will have hands at sides.

  • It is clear that each is on quite different ends of the spectrum.
  • I'd love to do ZBL

You Try/ A final reflection

Add your finished plan here as an upload file or as text you have cut and pasted into the wiki. We would love to give you feedback to help you get started. (remember it does not need be perfect, it is a first attempt). Alternatively it can be emailed to us instead.

I will need to email the document. Reflection added under L for KWL chart
